EU Directive 2019/904 accelerates the innovation of tethered caps
In May 2018, the European Union (EU) issued Directive 2019/904, which specifies the usage of disposal plastic packaging products. One of the provisions of Directive 2019/904 requires that the caps of all plastic bottles must be connected to the body before they can be produced and sold in the EU by June 2024.
The tethered bottle cap is fixed to the bottle body, so the bottle cap will no longer be discarded independently, but will be recycled along with the bottle body as a whole, and go into the new plastic product cycle after sorting and special processing. This will greatly increase the recycling of bottle caps, thus reducing the pollution of environment and bringing more considerable economic benefits. Some industry insider believe, by2024, all plastic bottles that meet the requirement in Europe will use tethered caps, this will be a very large and broad market for plastic caps.
Development of tethered cap
Attaching the cap to the body may sound like a simple task, but it is a major technical challenge for cap manufacturers, plastic bottle manufacturers and related equipment suppliers. The beverage industry ‘s requirements for tethered caps are very clear- tethered caps must not affect production costs, bottle design, bottle neck design, filling lines and capping machines while ensuring consumer convenience, freshness and quality. In addition, the tethered cap shall be applicable to light-weight capping ( mainly used for packaging of non sparkling water such as pure water) and screw caps to meet higher requirements of sealing performance.
