Plastic Lids Compression Molding

What is Plastic Bottle Closure Types?

Bottle caps can be officially defined as a closure device whose purpose is to ensure that the contents of a container stay within that container until they are ready to be used. The exterior of the cap is usually textured rather than smooth to make it easier to open and typically have a lip at the bottom of the cap. It is not uncommon for there to be some type of embossing to be present on top of the cap, usually providing directions as to how to open the bottle (in the case of medicinal bottles) or in the form of a company logo.
Plastic bottle caps such as those we find on water bottles or medication bottles usually have an internal thread manufactured to match the external thread on the container's neck to keep the cap in place. The threading inside the lid is specified in terms of tpi, or threads per inch, and the number of threads used depends on how secure the cap needs to be. In addition, there are standard threads, skirt sizes, and cap sizes that are in use that make it easier to match caps to bottles.

Benefits of Plastic Bottle Closure Types

Energy savings

Plastic bottle closure uses significantly less energy and natural resources during the manufacturing process compared to glass packaging production.

Recyclable

Did you know that plastic bottle closure are 100% recyclable? Through modern advancements in manufacturing technology, plastic bottle closure have been redesigned to be 30% lighter, reducing the amount of plastic used to make them.

Chemical Resistance

Regardless of your Plastic bottle closure creates a strong barrier with the outside environment allowing little to no oxygen passthrough. It does not react with water or food, making it perfect for packaging consumable goods.

Flexibility

Since plastic bottle closure can be molded into different shapes at a lower cost than glass, it makes it easier for brands to have a distinctive packaging design to identify and promote their products, everything from water, to carbonated soft drinks and more, and ultimately to help the product stand out on the store shelf.

Process of Plastic Bottle Closure Types

01/

Most plastic bottle caps are manufactured through a process known as injection moulding. In this process, thermoplastic polymer pellets are heated in a metal hopper to the point that they become very soft and flexible. (It would be at this stage that any custom colouring would already be added).

02/

The softened plastic is then injected under very controlled, high pressure into a complex, detailed steel mould.

03/

The mould forms the softened polymer into the desired shape for the bottle caps. Once the polymer material has cooled enough to harden, the mould is opened and the bottle caps are ejected.

04/

If several caps are being made from a single mould (as is often the case), they will be carefully separated from each other and prepare for further processing (e.g., wadding, sealing).

FAQ

Q: How do you sterilize plastic bottle caps?

A: I could also mix up a bleach solution and give them a soak and let them air dry before capping. Or I can give the caps a rinse in plain old distilled water, fill the bottles hot, cap and then invert them for 5 minutes. I think the hot fill/hold method achieves the sanitation during the inversion.

Q: Do you need to sterilize bottle caps?

A: You need to clean all bottle parts, teats and screw caps after every use. If your baby's bottles have not been used after 24 hours, you'll need to sterilise them again. If you are expressing breast milk, you will need to clean the expressing equipment at least once every 24 hours.

Q: Can you boil plastic lids?

A: However, it's important to remember that, whatever method you decide to go with, you should never put plastic or rubber lids in the oven, boiling water or the microwave.

Q: How long to sterilize plastic lids?

A: about 10-15 minutes To sterilize plastic containers and lids: Soak in hydrogen peroxide (3%) for about 10-15 minutes, give them a quick rinse and leave them out to dry in a clean environment. Or, spray with isopropyl alcohol (70%) and leave to air dry in a clean environment.

Q: What are the raw materials for cap manufacturing?

A: The plastic caps are usually made of Polyethylene Terephthalate, Polypropylene, Low-Density Polyethylene,High-Density Polyethylene,Polyvinyl Chloride, Polystyrene and Polycarbonate. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is non-toxic, light in weight, strong and durable, environmentally friendly and recyclable.

Q: What type of plastic are bottle caps made of?

A: The cap is a hard plastic, either high density polyethylene (HDPE), or polypropylene, while the bottle is made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). These plastics have very different melting points, 260oC for PET and 140-150oC for HDPE and polypropylene.

Q: Why is polypropylene used for bottle caps?

A: Polypropylene Caps are known for good impact strength, durability, cost effectiveness, thermal resistance, and pliability. Polypropylene bottle caps are autoclavable. Wide mouth PP caps are well-suited for many dry products.

Q: Are bottle caps thermoplastics?

A: Plastic bottle caps are made from polyethylene terephthalate. This is a thermoplastic polymer resin that is part of the polyester family. This type of plastic is widely used in beverage and food containers.

Q: What are the advantages of bottle caps?

A: Plastic caps, like most common plastic products, have several advantages including low cost, durability, customizability, and chemical stability. These advantages include significant financial savings and commercial dependability. Plastic caps are an excellent economical solution for food and beverage storage.

Q:What was the original purpose of the bottle cap?

A: Determined to prevent beverages from being ruined, Painter invented the Crown Cork bottle cap. The Crown Cork had a corrugated-flange edge and was lined with a thin cork disc and a special paper backing to seal the bottle and prevent contact between the metal cap and the drink.

Q: When was plastic bottle caps invented?

A: Bottle caps used to be made of fluted metal with a natural cork liner that formed a seal on a glass bottle. Cork was phased out as a sealant in the 1960s, in favor of-you guessed it-plastic.

Q: Why are bottle caps ribbed?

A: Ribbed design allows for better grip while smooth finish gives more of a simple and aesthetic look.

Q: How dense is a plastic bottle cap?

A: 0.92 grams per cubic centimeter Plastic bottle caps made with polypropylene have a density of 0.92 grams per cubic centimeter, which is lighter than seawater's average density of 1.027 grams per cubic centimeter, and therefore, float in seawater.

Q: How do bottle caps not leak?

A: To get an effective seal without high-precision fabrication, the inner top of the cap is usually lined with some compressible material (rubber, plastic foam, thick paper with a liquid-impermeable coating) to ensure a seal even if there is a minor unevenness in the rim or cap.

Q: Are bottle caps thermoplastics?

A: Plastic bottle caps are made from polyethylene terephthalate. This is a thermoplastic polymer resin that is part of the polyester family. This type of plastic is widely used in beverage and food containers.

Q: Are all bottle caps the same size?

A: Cap sizes are not interchangeable – a 28-400 cap will not fit properly on a bottle with a 28-410 neck finish. Cap sizes and the neck finish on a bottle have a unique system of measurements.

Q: What does bottle cap size mean?

A: The first number refers to the closure diameter (in mm) and the second number represents the GPI finish (the top of the container). For example, a neck size of 28-430 has a diameter of 28 mm and fits a container with a 430 GPI thread finish.

Q: What are the advantages of plastic caps?

A: These advantages include significant financial savings and commercial dependability. Plastic caps are an excellent economical solution for food and beverage storage. Caps that are properly applied can vacuum seal a container and provide consumers with an easy storage solution.

Q: Why are bottle caps so small?

A: Bottled water consumers might have noticed lately the shrinking size of plastic caps. Conceived as environmentally friendly, they've been marketed as the bottled-water industry's solution to plastic waste that otherwise would end up in a landfill.

Q: What plastic are bottle lids made of?

A: As the lids are usually made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP), they tend to float, whereas the plastic bottles, made from PET, are heavier and they will sink. This makes it easy for the different types of material to be separated so they can be recovered and turned into new items.
